Calculating the Possible Orbits of an Asteroid
When Rubin Observatory first discovers an asteroid, its orbit around the Sun is not well defined. Astronomers can calculate possible different orbits of the asteroid by running computer simulations to determine a set of orbits that can fit the measured positions.
At the right are the possible set of orbits (shown in pink) of the asteroid based on the first two observations.
